Children are adorable, you will never know until you have had them. Having the strongest affection a parent can want, once you have one – the love grows intensely and ‘wickedly’ sweet you want to keep staring at them all day, hour, night – in the order you would love.
Sometime ago, I thought of beginning a daycare business in my area. I had a few things to consider though: location, licence, water as at that time there wasn’t adequate water where we lived among many other things. After thinking, over thinking and rethinking I thought this business wasn’t meant for me. It was, I put too many obstacles on my way.
Licensing. Before bringing children to your home make sure you have the correct licensing to engage in the business. Reason being, sometimes, accidents happen and with children around the percentage is a little higher. Make sure you have talked with the officials at the Municipal offices so they run a check to verify if your premises is ideal for this business. I know most of you will beg to differ or even become randomly violent but, this is very ideal. Operate your business in daylight and not at night time when people have closed. The Municipal men and women are quite understanding once you co-operate with them. It makes you very credible when you stick some paper on you premise to identify you and make you a credible person. Many avoid the municipal because they also ask for a diploma paper to verify you have studied for a course in Early Childhood Development. While I agree, sometimes it isn’t very essential if you provide proof of having worked with your children, if you have any. Learn how to write a business plan here.
You will never run out of business. Children are being born every day. And mothers are increasingly checking for ways to work as they keep their children out of dangers of rogue housemaid like this one. The day care provides you with a steady supply of income due to this. As long as your business is good by providing great services, of course, chema chajiuza, good sells itself. Provide five star business and mothers will run to you whether you live in a place where you will have to pay for transport. We go far to have our babies to have best lives we can afford.
Spare money to make money. When we first took our children to day cares it was for the sole purpose of having her or him have a place to stay until I come home, right? Nowadays, we look for the best. We want to have our kids not only have a place to live in for hours, but, have excellent games, space, food. Provide for extra money. Toy games, a play ground and space for various activities and play things. Like small jikos, sufurias, basins for children. They are available for a lesser price. Make or buy puzzles and scrabbles games to teach children earlier on how to solve puzzles. Find resources for you or I can help research for you. If you have pets, teach kids how to walk pets. Avoid pets who shed fur, you don’t want those explorers getting sick. There are plastic laptops for a few thousand shillings, 3,999 on Jumia or local supermarkets, go on look. They teach children letters early on.
Encourage play. The purpose of a day care is for the children to have a second home away from home. Provide space in the house if living in a small area or neighbourhood, disarrange the furniture for the kids. Letting them explore what they love to do by themselves, you could put some clay, model clay, toys, ropes, swings, video games and cartoon times, mud. Each child with different activities to do. See, the success of day cares comes with providing five star treatment to children.
Expand. Sometimes, it’s not just the small children who need day care. Some bigger ones, at least six years or below ten always need some attendance. They can help look after the smaller ones later in the evening or play with them after school. The reason being … .
Once you choose to expand, educate. If you have a little training in school, numbers, letters is easy for you, especially if you do it simply and interestingly for kids. Encouraging kids who are having difficulty in maths or sciences or languages to love these disciplines earlier. What does this mean? More money for the day care woman or man. Are there men operating day cares? ”Mum, my day care teacher knows maths”. ”Or, my child has really improved on numeracy this term or semester. Can you offer extra hour lessons to her/him?”. It pays to expand knowledge.
Keep learning. Trends keep changing, kids keep having new ways they want to be handled and their parents too. Parents are ready to pay an extra dime as long as it caters for their children’s needs being tackled with love and care. No wonder centres are growing for children. No wonder those centres look so admirable on cameras because, those who run them know the importance of trends. Learn the trends too you don’t want to be left out.
Provide food. Yes, if some children don’t bring food from home, offer them at a lesser or as an inclusive price when parents are registering on day one.
Provide a register. Some days parents bring in their children, other times they don’t. Make sure to register children; new, old and constant ones. Getting parents’ contacts. This is not only important but, helps during emergencies in case of accidents or allergic outbreaks. Greet parents, encourage them to always keep in touch, provide details about their children’s health and so on. Let them provide feedback for your business. Feedback is a great way to know what to keep doing and what not.
Secure your home and children. Keeping a constant eye not only on the children but also on your home. Make it safe for kids to play in, ensuring that there are no sharp objects lying around. Or are out of reach of children. Others like medicine should be kept in sealed drawers and cabinets.
Teach crafts to school. Little minds love to be kept business every time. Teach them how to draw funny pictures of their mum, dad or relatives. How they look. How to paint for kids, make papier mache and so on. It doesn’t need a designer, kids love to make their minds busy.
Have a schedule. It can be overwhelming to have so many kids as yours and give you love. Others can be very violent, calm or jumpy, quick and slow. Know when what comes first and what carries the day. How do you finish the day?. How are you to begin the day, when, where?. Will you stretch out, jog or pray or dance?. When should the kids sleep? When can they have some treats for best behaviours? Plan ahead.
It’s a challenge. Having children running around, others tripping and falling? Others wanting you to stay with JUST them the whole day? It can be seriously brain strangling if you went in there for the money. Go there loving those kids with so much love, knowing no day will be the same. Love this, love them children as they are gifts from God.
Find a suitable location. A day care can be located anywhere, but, remember parents don’t want to travel miles away or take their children in unsafe neighbourhoods even if your services are above par. They want you to be found just like you want you to be found. Be available. Put posts, where you can be found. Allocate an arrow to indicate where, if it’s just a few metres away from the road. Be available on phone, too. Carry your mobile phone all the time when dealing with children. *The importance of having contacts of parents too in the register*.
Treat children equally. Some teachers I know will always treat other kids with love and better than others. Children are clever and will know. They will tell their parents and parents don’t want to hear that the day care mother loves others above others.
Know this is a business. Keep records, books, schedules, meetings, management, invoices, in short, all bills. You expect returns with your business, you want someone to pay you – write it down. Show it to yourself, monthly, weekly, quarterly, consistently. Check out what is going on with your business, in your business.
Love yourself. Of course, you say. Remember you want to make your business stand out. Every time of the week, hour, minute, you just want to be there to confirm it’s progress. Forgetting yourself is easy. Schedule a time like Sundays when most parents are at home taking care of their children. Make it me time or time for you and your children. Make it cuddling time, think about you, you and you. Business aside. Provide that schedule to the parents, unless, it’s really necessary. I would recommend though to make it you time, 24 hours.
Don’t be afraid to advertise. Tell people, draw business cards, tell parents of parents, put fliers. Tell others what you do. Believe in your abilities. Start small then let the small keep growing until you reach where you want to go. There’s lots of avenues for advertising nowadays, Olx Kenya, is one such channel. With time, you can go national or even turn your day care into a school.
Enhance your sanitation and hygiene. Have tissues and wipers for kids whose parents haven’t carried for them. Ensure adequate supply of clean water and toilet, with plenty of water. Boil water to drink and encourage kids to drink too as it’s healthy for them. Encourage washing hands before eating, after visiting the toilet. Kids love to be reminded, once it gets to be their routine … well, they recall.
